The Oracle roadmap has Java 12 set to be delivered in 2021. Now
that's what I call vision.

What have we in the Java performance community got to look forward
to over the intervening years? I've been looking over what's been
mentioned, and I see the following
- convergence of the JVMs into a one size-fits-all kernel JVM
which loads additional modules needed for the platform (probably
from JDK 8, 2013)
- micro-kernel JVM in JDK8 updates (2013-2014)
- improved out-of-the-box monitoring (based on convergence to
the current JRockit Mission Control, then extension to transparency
of monitoring); initially rolled into JDK7 in 2012; full JRockit
Mission Control convergence in 2013 for JDK8 release - see my
November 2011 newsletter for more details on this
- Flight recorder in a JDK8 update, 2013, record and playback JVM operations
- permgen removed from Oracle JVM by JDK8 release (2013) - possibly
before as this is targeted for a JDK7 update
- further JVM performance enhancements
- (nearly) deterministic GC - starting with G1 already present in latest JDK6
- cloud awareness and resource management (no date, speculative)
- self-tuning JVM (no date, speculative)
- data types re-vamped (speculative: large arrays, no more primitives,
multi-dimensional arrays, ...) JDK10, 2017
- transactional JVM memory (no date, speculative)
Of course we'll be here right through to Java 12, 2021, and beyond,
covering all those Java performance improvements and many more, just
as we have since 2000. And this month is no different - read on
for all our usual links to Java performance tools, news, articles,
the
extracted tips from all of this month's referenced articles,
and a new cartoon from fasterj.com
on how to improve performance by reducing application space and time.
