I haven't really found many useful memory and performance tips for Serverless Java in the past, so serverless content has been absent from the newsletter. That's changed this month because of Jeremy Daly's Serverless masterclass at Failover Conf last month.

Given the quality of his talk (if you have any Serverless I really recommend watching, see the links below) I decided to do a Serverless focused newsletter this month. Of course I've extracted the tips from his talk, but I've also trawled to find all the other Java Serverless articles and blogs relevant to Java memory and performance - and with Serverless the two go very much hand in hand as you'll see from the news, talks, blogs, articles, and tips I've extracted into this month's tips page.

Java performance tuning related news

• Lambda allocates CPU power linearly in proportion to the amount of memory configured. At 1,792 MB, a function has the equivalent of one full vCPU (one vCPU-second of credits per second)
• Java Serverless has better performance and consistency when you compare it with other languages for the same time window [cold starts are now addressable with provisioned concurrency]
• Lessons learnt using Serverless Lambda Functions - Analysing issues on serverless containers is hard - even AWS support don't have access to the containers that run the customer's Lambda functions; Write functions that can also be run outside the container for diagnosis of issues; the Lambda programming model suggests it is best used for one-off tasks like image processing, applying data validations, data transformation or for translating and mediating HTTP requests.
