I had a look at my newsletter from exactly 10 years ago about what is and what is not premature optimization. The advice is as useful now as it was then, some things don't change in IT.
I've met people who are confused about premature optimization. They think that any optimization at all early on in a project is premature. As my still relevant advice of ten years ago notes, that is very wrong. Ignacio Chiazzo's article on Micro and Macro Optimizations (see below) hints at how costly it can be when you DON'T optimize early - re-architecting your application is very expensive and effortful, especially when some thought at the beginning of the project let's you avoid having to make optimizations like that!
