In Richard Warburton's "Fantastic Performance" talk (see the articles below), he lists the free low overhead
profilers available for running against production systems. It's pretty interesting to see this list:
Since JDK 11, JDK flight recorder is free to use and probably the first choice from this list simply
because of ease of use - it's already in the JVM and can be triggered multiple ways (see my
newsletter with those details
and the tools section in this page to find the reference links).
Being able to profile a JVM in production as standard is a big step that we have had since JDK 11, being able to collect
and use those profiles as needed is further big step that you should build or buy so that you can analyse your system in
depth at any time.
